In interior design, curtains are often treated as an afterthought—a decorative fabric hung at the very end of a renovation. But at Everest Foam & Lining, we see drapery differently. We see it as soft architecture.

Window treatments are the filters through which natural light enters your home. They control the volume of a room, dictate the indoor temperature, frame outdoor views, and establish the ultimate spatial mood. When designed with architectural intent, drapery has the power to visually expand a low ceiling or soften a harsh minimalist interior.

Here is how we frame light and volume through bespoke drapery engineering.

1. The Optical Illusion: Height and Width

Most people hang curtains directly above the window frame and let them pool slightly on the floor. From an architectural perspective, this shrinks the space.

  • The Everest Method: Hang the curtain tracks as close to the ceiling as possible—ideally in a recessed ceiling pocket. Run the drapery all the way to the floor, stopping exactly 5mm above the flooring.
  • The Visual Impact: This draws the eyes upward, creating an illusion of high ceilings and a grander room volume. To maximize natural light, extend the track 12 to 18 inches wider than the window on both sides, allowing the curtains to clear the glass when opened.

2. Double-Layer Light Control

To balance Chennai's blazing midday sun with the soft morning breeze, a single curtain layer is rarely sufficient. We always recommend a dual-track system:

  • The Sheer Layer (Light Filtering): Made of linen blends or light-transmitting sheers, this layer diffuses the harsh glare into a warm, ambient glow while preserving daytime privacy.
  • The Master Drapery (Light Blocking & Insulation): Made of dense jacquards, rich velvets, or custom-lined cottons. This layer provides thermal insulation, noise reduction, and complete blackout capabilities for restful sleep or media rooms.

3. Thermal Lining: The Hidden Champion

Chennai's intense heat is not just uncomfortable; it also fades your furniture and wood flooring. Standard curtains do little to stop this. Every pair of master curtains crafted in our studio is fitted with a specialized thermal lining:

  • Interlining: A soft flannel fabric sandwiched between the main fabric and the lining to add fullness and acoustic dampening.
  • Blackout/Dimout Lining: Reflects incoming solar radiation, reducing the room's air conditioning load by up to 20% during peak summer months.

4. Choosing the Pleat Style

The header style dictates how the fabric folds and drapes.

  • Ripple Fold / S-Fold: The contemporary choice. Using a specialized track, the fabric forms perfect, uniform 'S' waves. Highly architectural, clean, and modern.
  • French Pleat (Three-Finger Pleat): The classic heritage choice. Elegant and formal, perfect for formal dining rooms and traditional living rooms.
