The Everest Standard: Our 1984 Heritage
Tracing the lineage of our stitching techniques and why we refuse to automate the fine details in an age of mass production.
By Everest Craft Team
In 1984, when Chennai was still Madras, Everest Foam & Lining opened its doors in Chennai with a singular, unwavering mission: to provide the city's homes with an uncompromising standard of custom comfort.
Today, over forty years later, the world has changed. Mass production, automated factories, and flat-pack furniture have dominated the landscape. Speed is often prioritized over substance; synthetic fiber has replaced natural fillings, and laser-fusing has replaced hand-stitching.
But inside the Everest workshop, time moves a little differently. We still measure twice, stitch slowly, and select our materials with the scrutiny of a collector. Here is the story of our heritage, and why we refuse to compromise on the fine details.
The Human Touch: Refusing Complete Automation
While we utilize modern machinery to cut polyurethane foam cores with millimeter precision, every final assembly, sewing seam, and tufting button is guided by human hands.
- Why? Because machines cannot 'feel'. A machine cannot feel the slight tension variance in a slub linen fabric as it is wrapped around a curved headboard. A machine does not know if a button is pulled to the exact depth that creates a comfortable, natural crease.
Our master craftsmen, some of whom have been stitching at Everest for over three decades, possess a tactile intelligence that no software can replicate.
The Art of the Hand-Welt
In upholstery, the welt (or piping) is the cord that runs along the seams of a cushion. In mass-market furniture, this is often glued on or machine-stitched using cheap synthetic piping.
- The Everest Standard: We wrap our welt cords in the exact fabric of the cushion, and hand-blind-stitch it directly into the structural seams. This creates a neat, incredibly strong border that prevents the seams from splitting, even under extreme pressure.
Sourcing Without Compromise
Our raw materials are sourced from the finest mills and producers:
- Pure Cotton Flannel & Felt: We use these natural materials to sandwich and line cushions, creating a breathable layer that prevents sweat and odors.
- Teak & Rosewood Dowels: Our frames are joined using hardwood dowels rather than cheap metal brackets that rust and squeak in Chennai's humid sea breeze.
A Legacy for the Next Generation
A piece of furniture crafted at Everest is not designed for a three-year rental cycle. It is designed to be lived on, played on, spilled on, and ultimately passed down. It is an investment in the material culture of your family.
When you walk into our studio in Mandaveli, you aren't just buying soft furnishings; you are participating in a Chennai craft heritage that is four decades strong.
Thank you for letting us craft the comfort of your homes since 1984. Let's keep the art of the handcraft alive.
